Like Festivus from Seinfeld, Wear Something Gaudy Day originated with a comment by a character on a popular television show, in this case the affable Larry Dallas on the sitcom Three's Company.
The wildly popular show followed three twenty-something roommates, two women and a man, living in Santa Monica, California. At the time it was considered scandalous for a heterosexual male to be roommates with two women. Today cohabitation is pretty normal, especially in high rent areas like Los Angeles suburb Santa Monica and New York City where rents run in the several thousands of dollars per month, even for a low end apartment.
